This page explains how CaHousingMarketNews.com handles information about visitors to our website. We’ve tried to write it in plain English. The short version: we use Google Analytics to understand how readers find and use the site, we don’t sell data, and we don’t track you across other websites.
Who we are
CaHousingMarketNews.com (the “Site”) is an independent publication covering the Sacramento-region housing market. Our website address is https://cahousemarketnews.com. For privacy questions or requests, contact us at [CONTACT EMAIL].
What we collect
Server logs
Our hosting provider (WP Engine) automatically records standard server logs every time anyone visits the Site. These logs contain your IP address, the page you requested, your browser and operating system, the time of the request, and the page that referred you. WP Engine retains these logs for security and operational purposes; we do not use them for tracking or analytics.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors find and use the Site — which articles get read, which pages get linked from, where readers come from geographically (at the city or region level), and what devices they use. This helps us decide what to cover and how to improve the site.
Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to collect this information. Specifically, it collects: a randomly generated client ID stored in a cookie on your device, your IP address (anonymized by Google before storage), pages you view on our Site, time spent on each page, browser and device information, and referral source.
This data is processed by Google, not by us. Google has its own privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing Google’s official browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, or by enabling “Do Not Track” in your browser, which we honor.
WordPress technical cookies
WordPress, the software that runs our Site, sets a small number of technical cookies in limited circumstances — for example, if you log in to our admin area as an editor. Regular readers browsing public articles do not receive WordPress login cookies.
Embedded content
Our articles do not embed video, social media posts, or interactive content from third parties. The data we display is generated server-side from public sources and rendered as static HTML and inline charts. If we add embedded content in the future, we will update this policy.
What we don’t collect
- We do not require accounts or registration to read articles.
- We do not run an email newsletter or collect email addresses.
- We do not have a comments section.
- We do not sell products or process payments on the Site.
- We do not run advertising networks (Google AdSense, programmatic ads, retargeting pixels, etc.).
- We do not use Facebook Pixel, TikTok Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, or any other social media tracking pixel.
- We do not share, sell, rent, or trade any data we collect with third parties for marketing purposes.
Partner placements
Some articles include sponsored “Partner” cards from local real estate professionals. These are clearly disclosed with a “PARTNER” label. The cards link out to the partner’s own website. When you click a partner link, you leave our Site and your browsing on the partner’s site is governed by their privacy policy, not ours. We do not pass your information to partners; the only thing they see is a normal HTTP referrer indicating the click came from us, which most websites log automatically.
Your rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you specific rights regarding personal information. You have the right to know what categories of personal information we collect about you, the right to request deletion of your personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The only personal information we hold about you is what Google Analytics processes on our behalf, plus standard server logs from our host.
To exercise your rights, email [CONTACT EMAIL]. We will respond within 45 days as required by California law. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have similar rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access, correct, port, or delete your personal data. The same contact email applies.
Children’s privacy
Our Site is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Data retention
Google Analytics retains user-level data for 14 months by default, after which it is automatically deleted. WP Engine retains server logs according to their standard policy, typically 30 days. We do not have a separate database of reader information.
Security
We serve the Site over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate. Our hosting provider WP Engine implements server-level security including firewalls, malware scanning, and brute-force protection. No system is perfectly secure, but we follow current industry practices.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change how we handle your information — for example, if we add advertising networks or start collecting email addresses — we will update this page and revise the “Last updated” date at the top. For significant changes, we will note the change with a banner on the homepage for at least 30 days.
Contact
For privacy questions, requests to exercise your rights, or concerns about how we handle information, email [CONTACT EMAIL]. We read every message.
